A Timeline of CHS Group
Cecil “Cec” Hopper founds the business in Horsham, working solo as an electrician. With a bike as his transport and a passion for neat, high-quality work, Cec quickly earns a reputation for being reliable and meticulous. Early clients include local farmers, the water board, and Noske Flour Mills.
Cec plays a key role in helping households across the region transition from DC to AC power—an essential service that boosts business and positions him as a trusted name in electrical work throughout the Wimmera.
At just 14 years old, Cec’s son David joins the business as an apprentice, learning the ropes directly from his father and beginning a lifelong career in the electrical and construction industry.
With Cec stepping back, brothers David and Barry Hopper officially take over the management of the business. Together, they lead CHS through a period of steady expansion and diversification.
Under David’s direction, the business takes on large water treatment projects and adapts to evolving technologies in the electrical space. Barry, an A-Grade electrician and HV expert, helps deliver specialised services in high voltage systems and the grain industry.
CHS grows from a specialised electrical business into a multi-trade operation, gradually adding plumbing, civil works, engineering, renewable energy, irrigation, and truck servicing. Each new service brings a dedicated team and deepens the business’s capability.
With multiple divisions operating across a wide range of services, the company officially becomes CHS Group—an abbreviation of Cec Hopper & Sons. The name reflects both the company’s roots and its future as a comprehensive, multi-service provider across Western Victoria.
After the passing of valued team member Ron Klemm, CHS creates an annual award in his honour. Known for his big heart, strong work ethic and deep involvement in local sport, Ron’s legacy lives on through an award that recognises employees who go above and beyond—just like he did.
Today, CHS Group employs over 150 staff and works across industries including local government, renewable energy, civil construction, mining, and agriculture. We remain proud of our roots in Horsham and committed to supporting the region through employment, training and community giving.
With 60+ years behind us, CHS Group continues to grow while holding firm to the values that started it all—quality work, strong relationships, safety, and giving back to the communities that support us.
